'Sara'S' review: Anchored by a powerful script, this simple film breaks the conventions of the feel-good template

Jude Anthany Joseph's third feature, after Ohm Shanti Oshana and Oru Muthassi Gadha, released on Prime Video at midnight today. This seemingly feel-good film, also seemingly made in limited spaces and with a shoestring budget, tackles a concept and issue never tested before in Malayalam cinema  circles. In Sara'S, we follow the life of Sara Vincent (Anna Ben), a young, bubbly, yet unapologetic filmmaker who struggles to make it big in the industry. She continuously assists male directors and is in the scripting works of her dream film. Sara has decided, from her school days, that she would not bear any kids. This is when she meets Jeevan (Sunny Wayne); her relationship with him subsequently brings her ideology and decision into a confrontation with the established norms of society, family and child-rearing.  Anna Ben in Sara'S The best aspect in which Sara'S has excelled, without doubt, is its hard-hitting taut script. Debutant Akshay Hareesh deserves praise for managin...

The decade that was Marvel

Like it or not- the decade that passed belonged to the superhero genre, or more specifically, to Marvel. No other entity has been able to create the impact that Marvel brought into filmmaking, pop culture, fandom and above all, the movie business. Despite its’ humble beginnings in 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe grew in popularity and scale, that finally culminated in the cinematic event that was Avengers: Endgame.  Here’s a look into how Marvel owned the 2010s. The establishment of a production house solely dedicated to the making of films based on the Marvel superhero canon and its’ acquisition by the media juggernaut, Disney, was in fact what turned the tables in favor of Kevin Feige and Co. In the hands of a big powerhouse, Feige would have clearly seen the possibility of fulfilling his dream of creating a cinematic universe with all of the comic books’ characters in it. Fans are certain, even today, that the Marvel Cinematic Universe di...

Spider-Man: Far From Home- setting up the MCU after Endgame

After the epic showdown in the blockbuster Avengers: Endgame ( read full review here ), MCU-philes were eagerly waiting for the next installment in the ever-expanding universe- Spider-Man: Far From Home. With Kevin Feige, the brain behind Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, announcing that FFH would be the final film in the Phase Three of the MCU, the hype surrounding the film was only upped to witness what it would do in setting up the next series of events and films in the MCU. The Reviewer reviews how the second installment in the second rebooting of the franchise about the web-slinging friendly neighborhood Spider-Man intends to treat the exploits of the superhero . In the new world order after the Blip (as the Decimation and the reversal are named in the MCU), Peter Parker is still reeling from the loss of his mentor-cum-father figure Tony Stark, who sacrificed his life saving the universe in the events of Endgame. All he now wants is to make some progres...

Avengers: Endgame- a befitting finale to a decade long saga

Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel just wasn't enough. The fans wanted more. Ever since The Mad Titan snapped half the population into oblivion in the cataclysmic events in Infinity War, the makers have since then been trying to build the perfect showdown and a befitting ode to the decade long running Infinity Saga (from Iron Man to Endgame). Here's Reviewer's review of the massive ensemble superhero blockbuster.   Endgame picks up from where we left off. See the rest for yourself. Because you just cannot discuss plot details without revealing essential spoilers. And that would kill the joy of watching this extravagant treat.   For the makers and the brains behind this huge franchise, crafting an epic conclusion with an exhilarating visual spectacle and mind-blowing action just isn't an easy task. While  Infinity War proved that the Russo brothers could successfully pull off a cinematic event with a huge ensemble cast, the director duo reassert...

James Gunn returns to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

It's a happy news for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After suffering severe backlash from fans and critics for it's decision to fire James Gunn from the director's chair of Guardians Of The Galaxy 3, the studio finally conceded and reinstated the popular director to helm the third entry in the space opera-cum-superhero franchise. James Gunn Having directed the first two GoTG installments with overwhelming critical and popular response, James Gunn was the favored candidate to wear the director's hat for Vol.3. However, Gunn's statements in the micro-blogging platform Twitter, which had been posted almost a decade ago and subsequently deleted, served as antagonist, which led to Marvel Studios firing him from the job. The crude tweets were made about topics like the Holocaust, AIDS, and Mexican people. Despite the studio's attempts to justify it's action, public favor was found to be in support to James Gunn, as fans appealed in masses to...

Black Panther and Spider-Verse: Why Marvel had it's biggest night at the Oscars

Marvel had it's own reasons to celebrate in the 91st Academy Awards, even when favorites like  Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody and Roma ended up achievers of the night. Two exceptional movies from the Marvel comics made it's way to earn the coveted statuettes of the Academy Awards- Black Panther from the multi-billion colossal Marvel Cinematic Universe and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures' animation venture (which was not an MCU film). Both movies had earned critical as well as popular acclaim, with many praising them as novel works of sorts. An Academy Award was something that the MCU had lacked ever since it's inception in 2008 with Iron Man. Albeit receiving numerous nominations in the category of Best Visual Effects for it's blockbusters such as Iron Man, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy etc., never had once the franchise grabbed a win in this category. Interestingly the only Marvel film to win a statuette was Sam Raimi's Sp...
