'Sara'S' review: Anchored by a powerful script, this simple film breaks the conventions of the feel-good template

Jude Anthany Joseph's third feature, after Ohm Shanti Oshana and Oru Muthassi Gadha, released on Prime Video at midnight today. This seemingly feel-good film, also seemingly made in limited spaces and with a shoestring budget, tackles a concept and issue never tested before in Malayalam cinema  circles. In Sara'S, we follow the life of Sara Vincent (Anna Ben), a young, bubbly, yet unapologetic filmmaker who struggles to make it big in the industry. She continuously assists male directors and is in the scripting works of her dream film. Sara has decided, from her school days, that she would not bear any kids. This is when she meets Jeevan (Sunny Wayne); her relationship with him subsequently brings her ideology and decision into a confrontation with the established norms of society, family and child-rearing.  Anna Ben in Sara'S The best aspect in which Sara'S has excelled, without doubt, is its hard-hitting taut script. Debutant Akshay Hareesh deserves praise for managin...

Avengers: Endgame- Trailer Breakdown

The wait is coming to an end. Ever since the Marvel Studios broke the hearts of fans and left audiences flabbergasted with it's surprising cliffhanger of a climax in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, theories and questions on how the Earth's Mightiest Heroes will undo the damage done by Thanos's apocalyptic snap. Last December, the studio had released the teaser of the film, which revealed the title of the 22nd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Avengers: Endgame, whilst also revealing the release date of the film on 26th April 2019. During the Super Bowl, a thirty second TV spot premiered on prime time TV, revealing more visuals and upping the ante for the hype of the film. On Thursday, the studio released a two minute trailer of Endgame. Here's Reviewer-The Blog's breakdown of the trailer of Avengers: Endgame.

1) Flashbacks

The trailer opens with iconic scenes from the previous MCU films, starting with 2008's Iron Man (the one that started it all)- Tony Stark removing his Iron Monger mask, Pepper's memento of the Arc Reactor, which says "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart". The trailer also features scenes from the first Captain America movie and the second Thor film. The flashbacks also feature voices of Tony mentioning how it all felt like a thousand years ago, how he made his way out of the cave and became Iron Man, of Peggy Carter saying how the world has changed, and Thor admitting how he watched everyone die after The Snap. The flashbacks are shown in red and black- and is quite the reminiscent throwback for all MCU-philes who have grown to adore the characters and movies in the franchise.

2) Nat's new hairdo

Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow in the film, surprised fans in the previous Avengers outing by changing her hair color from red to blonde. However, in Endgame's trailer, we find her hair changing from blonde to her normal red. What does this mean? It could be most probably indicate the time travel prospect in Endgame, the one possibility that has been most deliberated by fans over the previous year. What confirms this theory is the fact that Steve Rogers sported the same beard he had in Infinity War, in the post credit scene of Captain Marvel, albeit his appearance in the recent trailer without it. This almost confirms the theories that time travel could be playing a crucial role in bringing the dead heroes and half of the universe back.

3) Kate Bishop, perhaps?

The next shot shows Clint Barton aka Hawkeye teaching his daughter archery. And we see her hitting the bulls-eye. What's interesting is that Clint's daughter, Kate Bishop, is a prominent character in the comics, as she is the third person to adopt the Hawkeye identity, also possessing sharpshooting skills just like her father. This scene has left audience wondering whether Kate Bishop will make her debut in Endgame. And with other minor characters like Cassie Lang and the more recent Monica Rambeau present in the MCU, we can only imagine how these superheroes depicted in the comic book pages will join forces in the ever-growing universe.

4) Scott's confused

Next, we see Scott Lang looking dazed and confused at missing posters stuck on a tree in front of his house. Evidently, Scott might have just come out of his unfortunate entrapment in the quantum realm, but is taken aback by the fact that half the people he knew might have disappeared in events he has not witnessed.

5) Quinjet...

Next scene we see a Quinjet, after a long time, descending on the night skies of London. The remaining Avengers are probably embarking on a mission. But we are uncertain on what or why the Avengers have set off on this particular job.

6) Nat and Clint join forces...again

We also see Black Widow and Hawkeye suit up again, apparently for yet another mission. We saw their camaraderie and bonhomie in Avengers. It appears that they will join hands again. To the makers, we still haven't forgotten both characters mentioning Budapest a couple of times.

7) Hawkeye misses by the skin of his teeth

Hawkeye is seen running across a red-lit corridor and jumps to escape from a blast. We also see in a later shot Hawkeye aiming his arrow at something. But how is Clint still wielding his bow and arrow, when we saw him in Japan brandishing his sword in front of Natasha? Possible explanation is that Clint is narrating events before becoming the swashbuckling Ronin, to the rest of the Avengers.

8) Rocket ready to kick ass

One exciting takeaway from the trailer is Rocket appearing in his classic costume from the comics. He is seen loading his gun atop Col. Rhodes' War Machine, who is also seen to be wearing a modified armor. Rocket might finally get the ass-kicking screen time in this MCU entry. Another thriller of a takeaway is that this shot gives fans the first of many hints in the trailer, which reveals the setting of a massive battle sequence that could feature in the final act of the film.

9) That battle sequence we talked about...

A few more shots give more hints about the colossal battle sequence that could appear in the film. We see Nebula charging furiously at somebody. We also see Captain America, soiled and bloodied from battle, strapping his shield in anger. Ant-Man is seen using a pencil to leap and charge at somebody. Fans will be surely on the edge of their seats when the directors treat them with this sequence.

10) The Quantum Realm Suits

And the goosebump moment in the trailer. We see the original Avengers, including Nebula, Scott Lang and Col. Rhodes walk through the hangar bay of the Avengers Facility, suited in the quantum realm suits we last saw Hank Pym wearing in Ant-Man and the Wasp. The suits are designed to grant safe passage through the perilous Quantum Realm. The Avengers might be venturing into the Realm, most probably to harness it's possibility of time travel through the time vortexes present there.

11) Captain Marvel's here...

Carol Danvers makes her presence felt in the trailer, in the scene after the title is shown. Here, Thor summons his Stormbreaker, which brushes dangerously close to the face of an unflinching Carol. Seeing thos, Thor remarks, "I like this one." Thor and Captain Marvel. Watch out, Thanos.

That's the breakdown of the trailer of Avengers: Endgame. What are your takeaways from the trailer?

Endgame will debut in theaters on 26th of April, 2019.

'Raat Akeli Hai' review: A murder mystery powered by an almost-perfect cast and tonally perfect making, but fizzles out in parts

Honey Trehan's debut film, Raat Akeli Hai , released digitally on Netflix on the 31st of July. Starring a talented crop of fine artists such as Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, Shweta Tripathi, Tigmanshu Dhulia and many others, Raat Akeli Hai was touted to be a film in the crime thriller genre, with many already labeling it as an Indian Knives Out. Here's our review on the desi crime thriller. A dead man, that too a powerful patriarch/politician, shot point blank in a sprawling mansion in the rural hinterlands of Gwalior, a posse of family members with unclear intentions who have not heard a thing or the commotion that ensued before it, and an unwanted newcomer to the family whose origins and backgrounds are shadier than those of the family members combined. Add to that a cop, like in other similar movies of the genre, hell bent on digging up the truth. What debutant Honey Trehan and writer Smita Singh orchestrates here is the perfect setting for a gripping whodunit. Whethe...

Kizie meets Manny for the first time, as he effortlessly sways to the title track, a peppy urbane 'Dil Bechara' by A.R Rahman. Kizie and Manny bond over Kizie's infatuation and fascination over an incomplete song, penned and composed by a mysterious musician named Abhim...
